Blue Jays Update: September 2nd 2009

September 1st Game 1 of 2 Complete

Texas Rangers 5 (W 73-58)
Toronto Blue Jays 2 (L 59-71)

Dustin Nippert (W, 5-2)
Marc Rzepczynski (L, 2-4)

Game Notes:

Game one of a double header in Texas saw the Toronto Blue Jays offense run cold, as the Jays only managed to score two runs on six hits, as Adam Lind provided all the offense for the Jays.

Lind went 2-3 with a home run (28) and a double (43) as the combination of Texas starter Dustin Nippert, highly prized reliever Neftali Feliz and closer Frank Francisco shutdown the Jays for the opener of a two game set.

Sure handed Toronto shortstop Marco Scutaro committed two errors in the game, an occurance out of the ordinary for Scutaro, who has not committed more than one error in a game since July 6th 2007, when he committed four.

Texas reliever Neftali Feliz showed why he is one of the fastest rising stars in baseball striking out four batters over two scoreless innings, not allowing a single baserunner.

Feliz has pitched 19.2 innings this season so far, posting an ERA of 0.46, striking out 26 and walking only 1.

Feliz made Jays slugger Aaron Hill look miserable in the top of the eighth inning with one of the nastiest breaking balls a major hitter will see. This came directly after Hill was almost beaned in the head with a 97mph fastball from Feliz.

Adam Lind, 2-3, 1HR, 1RBI, 2 runs scored, 1BB

Ian Kinsler, 2-4, 1HR, 1RBI, 1 run scored
Nelson Cruz, 2-3, 2RBI, 1 run scored, 1BB
Chris Davis, 3-4, 2RBI

Final starting pitching lines for the game:

Marc Rzepczynski - 6IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 9K
Dustin Nippert - 6IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 4K

September 1st Game 2 of 2 Complete

Texas Rangers 5 (W 74-58)
Toronto Blue Jays 2 (L 59-72)

Brandon McCarthy (W, 6-2)
Brian Tallet (L, 5-9)

Game Notes:

Game two of the doubleheader between the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays would end up wih the exact same score as game one, albeit the way of garnering these runs was different.

Two home runs from the struggling Josh Hamilton, along with another added by Texas first baseman Chris Davis would be the difference in this game, as Toronto's offense was yet again stiffled by the Rangers pitching staff.

Texas starter Brandon McCarthy would allow only one run, on three hits, over six and a third innings of work before passing it onto a bullpen who completely shutdown the Jays offensively.

Again, the Jays offense could only produce two runs on six hits.

Recent call up Joe Inglett had a decent game two at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk.

Joe Inglett, 2-2, 1BB

Josh Hamilton, 2-4, 2HR, 2RBI, 2 runs scored
David Murphy, 2-4, 1 double, 1 run scored
Chris Davis, 2-4, 1HR, 2RBI, 1 run scored

Final starting pitching lines for the game:

Brian Tallet - 5IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 4BB, 4K
Brandon McCarthy - 6.1IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K

Blue Jays News:

Three callups were made before yesterday's double header and more are expected to come for the Jays.

The Jays called up utility player Joe Inglett, and relievers Brian Wolfe and Dirk Hayhurst to the big league squad.

The Jays will likely add two to four more players when Las Vegas' season ends on September 7th 2009.

Other Baseball News:

The St.Louis Cardinals fortified their bullpen for next year by extending the contracts of closer Ryan Franklin and left handed specialist Trevor Miller yesterday.

Houston Astros infielder and long time veteran Aaron Boone returned to the Astros lineup yesterday for the first time since having heart surgery five months ago.

The surgery was deemed as a possible career ender for the veteran, but Boone has recovered quickly, already completing a rehab assignment and joining the Astros lineup Tuesday.
