Blue Jays Update: Aug 11th 2009

August 10th Game Complete

Toronto Blue Jays 5 (W 54-57)
New York Yankees 4 (L 69-43)

Shawn Camp (W, 1-5)
Sergio Mitre (L, 1-1)
Jason Frasor (SV, 5)

Game Notes:

In the midst of the big news of Alex Rios being shipped to the Chicago White Sox for nothing in return(except that the White Sox assumed every penny remaining on his contract), the Toronto Blue Jays ended the New York Yankees seven game winning streak, at New Yankee Stadium.

Blue Jays starting pitcher Marc Rzepczynski left the game early in the fourth inning, after allowing four runs on seven hits, three being home runs to Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Jerry Hairston Jr.

The Blue Jays bullpen was stellar as Shawn Camp, Brandon League, Jesse Carlson, and Jason Frasor combined to allow zero runs, on four hits while walking none, and striking out seven to save hold for the Blue Jays win.

Toronto's offense was sparked by a home run from Aaron Hill, an RBI triple from Joe Inglett and the go ahead and game winning home run from Lyle Overbay.

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Paul Schrieber.

Final starting pitching lines for the game:

Marc Rzepczynski - 3.1IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 1BB, 0K
Sergio Mitre - 5IP, 6H, 5R, 3ER, 1BB, 6K

Blue Jays News:

With the loss of Rios, first baseman Randy Ruiz is expected to get the call up from Triple A Las Vegas.

Ruiz is having a huge year for the Las Vegas 51's.

Ruiz's current statistics are: .320AVG, 25HR, 106RBI in 462AB.

Other Baseball News:

The Arizona Diamondbacks have demoted once prized outfielder Chris Young. Young was optioned to Triple A Reno on Monday evening.

Young was hitting .194 with 23 doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 103 games when he was sent down Monday. He had two hits in his last 30 at-bats, and his average has not been above .205 since April 30. He had only three RBIs in his last 24games.

Young's centre field position will now be played full time by rookie Gerardo Parra.

Pedro Martinez will make his return to the major leagues on Wednesday, when he makes a start for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

To make room for Martinez in the starting rotation, aging veteran left hander Jamie Moyer was sent to the bullpen.

Finally, Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hit for the cycle on Monday against the Chicago Cubs.

Tulowitzki was an unblemished 5-5, with seven runs batted in and eleven total bases, as the Rockies beat the Cubs 11-5.
