Blue Jays Update: August 2nd 2009

August 1st Game Complete

Toronto Blue Jays 6 (W 50-54)
Oakland Athletics 5 (W 44-59)

Brett Cecil (W, 5-1)
Trevor Cahill (L, 6-10)
Jason Frasor (SV, 4)

Game Notes:

Aaron Hill's three run home run in the top of the fourth inning off of Oakland starting pitcher Trevor Cahill was the big difference in the game.

The home run was Hill's 25th of the season. Hill is the first second baseman to reach 25 home runs since Alfonso Soriano accomplished the feat in 2005.

Brett Cecil pitched a very good game, aside from one inning. Cecil got into trouble in the 2nd inning allowing four runs, but was next to unhittable after that, pitching seven strong innings to come away with the win.

Aaron Hill, 2-5, 1HR, 4RBI, 1 run scored
Lyle Overbay, 2-3, 1HR, 1RBI, 1 run scored, 1BB
Vernon Wells, 2-4, 1 run scored
Raul Chavez, 2-4, 1 double, 1RBI, 1 run scored

Jack Cust, 2-4, 2 runs scored
Adam Kennedy, 1-4, 1 double, 3RBI

Final starting pitching lines for the game:

Brett Cecil - 7IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 1BB, 3K
Trevor Cahill - 5.1IP, 8H, 6R, 6ER, 4BB, 2K

Blue Jays News:

Newly acquired third baseman Edwin Encarnacion started the game at third base for the Jays going 1-4 with a single for the night.

Newly acquired reliever Josh Roenicke also joined the team in last night's game, but did not make an appearance out of the bullpen.

Blue Jays closer Scott Downs took the mound in the ninth with a 6-4 lead.

Downs retired the first hitter, but then Jack Cust lined a ball off his left toe.

The ball dribbled away for an infield single.

Tommy Everidge then lined a double into right field.

Gaston then brought the trainer to the mound to have a look at Downs, who had been on the disabled list with an injury to his left toe last month.

Gaston said Downs had aggravated the injury. He'll be re-evaluated on Sunday.

Scott Rolen went 0-4 in his Cincinnati Reds debut last night at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rolen was traded from the Jays to the Reds earlier this week.

Other Baseball News:

Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates had a monster day yesterday with three home runs, four hits, and six runs batted in for a 11-6 win over the Washington Nationals.

Josh Beckett won his major league leading 13th win yesterday over the Baltimore Orioles.
