Blue Jays Update: July 17th 2009



July 17th Game Complete

Toronto Blue Jays 1 (L 44-47)
Boston Red Sox 4 (W 55-34)

Clay Buchholz (W, 1-0)
Ricky Romero (L, 7-4)
Jonathan Papelbon (SV,24)

Game Notes:

Clay Buchholz held the Blue Jays offense to four hits, and one earned run over five and two thirds innings in his first major league start of the season. Buchholz was making a spot start and will return to Triple A Pawtucket.

Toronto has lost 13 of their last 16 games and dropped to a season low three games below .500

Ricky Romero lost his first game in seven starts.

Vernon Wells did not play in the game as he was recovering from a stomach virus.

David Dellucci made an incredible diving catch in left field in the top of the seventh inning.

Lyle Overbay had three of Toronto's four hits in the game.


Other Blue Jays notes:

Blue Jays left hander Brian Tallet will return to the Blue Jays bullpen over the next few weeks while Toronto uses off days to go with a four man rotation.

Other baseball news:

Former Blue Jays closer BJ Ryan has signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo was designated for assignment to clear space for Jed Lowrie and will most likely be given his outright release later this week.
